First and foremost, the south is a region, not a culture. A political, historical, and geographical region.
Texas is politically, geographically, and historically a southern state.
Southerrners are not an ethnic group. Not all of the south is "dixie", and various southern sub-groups (such as hilbillies and cajuns) don't have to do much with each other.
Even if they were, East Texas is the deep south. So when Mautty says "only east texas is southern" he is saying only east Texas is super mega ultra southern. Which means the rest of the state is at least a bit southern.
Texas isnt even the most culturally distinct part of the south. It is not as much of a "blend" region as the border states, it is not as conspicuously pro-intellectual as Virginia, it is not as culturally different as Louisiana.
Texas is more urbanized and not as xenophobic as the south is; but neither is Florida. In fact Texas is very analagous to Florida, in that it's part of the south even when it isn't.
As for Texas being part of the southwest, do Texans REALLY act like southwesterners? Texans (predominately) more likely to act like a southern (and vice versa) than southwesterners. Even the Texas Cowboys aren't really the southwestern type.
This is why Texas is part of the south and not the southwest, because as you can see you are not in fucking SoCal |

That'd be fine in my book, but you'd be putting your personal safety at risk, considering a few miles away there's an all-white town (seriously, all-white, minus a couple mixed indians (the last blacks to reside there were chased off in a week (I'm not fucking joking!)) that's a KKK hotspot, and it's probably been a while since they had a good-old fashion spook hunt
