I am not good at this game. If I sneak it takes me a long time. Unless it is supposed to.
Some of the prisoner missions though I spend way to long floating people away that they all die.
Just started the Huey Emmerich side mission.
I just got the transportation specialist which should help me getting fuel resources. |

Like John Buis, I got this game for Christmas and enjoyed it a lot. The regular gameplay really is just fantastic.
That being said, everything in Jason's rant is 100% accurate. Also, the final main storyline revelation is stupid as hell. ALSO, if I ever have to hear Code Talker say "English..." in his most portentous tones again, I will stab someone.
So, now I'm replaying the whole series again, and it's kind of jarring going back to MGS1 when Miller has the first name "McDonnell" and isn't a giant dick who constantly advocates for murdering every other character. |

I'd forgotten I even made a post in here for that. I assumed I'd left it shamefully unsaid what a humiliating defeat MGSV was for me.
Seeing that also makes me want to see what I wrote at the time at my other (better) board: _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

I've been avoiding this thread for about a week now since finishing this game, out of both disappointment and shame. I'll put specifics in spoiler tags if they come up, but are people generally up to date now on what a disaster this game is?
Â
As succinctly as possible, Phantom Pain is an unfinished, underwritten, horribly paced collection of broken promises.
Â
And what makes me lose sleep at night isn't that this is the bastard swan song of my favorite game series of all time, it's that due to industry machinations, history might not even remember it as such.
Â
Quote: | For fear of spoilers, Konami invited journalists to review the game at five-day 'boot camps' tied to strict NDAs (non-disclosure agreements). We played between 9am to 5pm, with no unsupervised play outside these hours. That's a maximum play time of 40 hours, assuming no stoppages for eating, drinking, stretching… or reality. So you're trying to complete a 35-50 hour game (or longer, depending on your play style and the nature of your 'completion'… I can't say more), that you've been anticipating for five years, in a realistic window of 30-35 hours. On one hand, you're finally immersed in one of the deepest, most experimental, open-worlds in history – overwhelmed by side-missions, upgrades and secrets – on the other, haunted by a tick-tock race to reach the 'end' without knowing when that is.
|
Â
That's the most information that, as far as I can tell, anyone is willing to disclose about the pre-embargo review process for Phantom Pain. Tell me if I'm reaching. I just cannot fathom how it is otherwise possible for the critical reaction to the game to be so positive when the main, through line story thread literally fails to conclude. I realize how it looks like I'm stirring up conspiracies and arguing over subjective review scores, but I'm tempted to say that I genuinely doubt that many critics even finished the game at this so-called boot camp.
Â
Whether it was a combination of not taking the story seriously enough to care if it had adequate closure because a Metal Gear game is just an incoherent rubber band ball of plot threads they're only forced to confront every three or four years or just being satisfied with the gameplay mechanics and the ending credits roll of chapter one, I look at Metacritic and see a list of complacent reviewers which rewarded a narratively broken game in a way that should not be excusable.
Â
I hate being this guy who is writing on a message board to complain about game reviews. It sucks that caring about ethics in gaming journalism is the wackest, shittiest thing to care about in the entire world; even before GamerGate, which I'd venture is too busy doxxing people who complained about Quiet's breasts than to actually notice anything out of order here. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

I don't hate the story, it's just not executed well and it's obviously unfinished. |

So are we still missing the story of Gray Fox's back story? Or is it all in Metal Gear? |

I already guessed the giant spoiler in the beginning of the game. The story is neat enough for me so far but I have only done up to mission 10. Also now I am going to keep grinding mission 8 until I have everything caught up in research. Also I NEED MORE FUEL!!!!! |

Gray Fox's origin was done in Portable Ops but that's not officially canon (however, neither is it officially discredited or contradicted by Kojima, nor will it be now). No game covers his past with Naomi.
All the events referenced by Solid Snake in MGS, obviously, take place in Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 (save for the general characterization of Frank Jaeger being his mentor, which is what could have been in a perfect Chapter 3+ of Metal Gear Solid V).
Life's gonna suck for you if you need resources, you chump ass motherfucker. They were hard to farm at first, then the game got patched to make them even more distributed between Mother Base and your FOBs, so that you need to cough up for MB Coins. Fuck Konami, fuck MGSV. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

Even if the game weren't bad, it would still be bad because of Quiet who is one of the most contemptible characters I know of in fiction ("contemptible" here meaning "inspiring contempt toward the creator"). |

The whole "she has to be naked to breath" thing? That is pretty bad.
I am getting there with resources but noticed those MB coins as a horrible inclusion to the game. I do not have PS+ so I have not even touched or had to worry about the whole online thing and being invaded and what not. |

Ok, if I assume going into this that the story is shit, should I purchase this?
Keep in mind that if I'm going to have to resource manage a bunch, I'm out. I'm not playing a god damn RTS. |

It's a very fun game with probably the best gameplay in the series. You do have to do resource management in the middle of the game to upgrade your gear. You can half-ass that aspect of the game and still be fine. _________________

You will have to go find resources over and over to unlock crazy weapons and stuff otherwise I would think you can make it through most of the game with a tranq gun and for some missions you would have to make a missle launcher, grenades, and C4.
The gameplay is awesome! |
