Mushrooms are rarely "inert" in fiction. They're always making people transform.

Ayahuasca, a flower, is supposedly very similar in its transforming nature. The "fire flower".

That awful Mario Brothers movie would allude to such interpretations.

Now there is a lot of gray area as to the details of the creation of Mario Brothers. Legally, it's most convenient for corporations to give all credit to one person. In truth, origins are blurred somewhere between Miyamato, warehouse managers, a german composer, and Nintendo's sprite art department (which really created all of Mario's enemies and power ups).

If you followed Nintendo's humor approach to all their games in that era (this was really before they targeted children), then there's a truckload of circumstantial evidence that the references aren't coincidental.
