I thought you were using 'Web programming' in a sense that included markup.

I doubt there are any people involved in the specification of various markups on the Web that aren't programmers. Actually being on this sort of list for writing an HTML document is pretty asinine, though. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

Anyway, knowing programming obviously makes everything better and easier, just like knowing how to draw probably means your site will be prettier than someone that can't do that, all other things being equal. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

Theldorrin, I know that HTML and CSS are markup and not programming, but explain to me the difference between programming and writing a php script!
Would you consider that "web programming"? |

Yes.
PHP is a programming language, albeit a filthy one. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

Just because something is difficult and programming experience helps in doing it, doesn't mean that it's programming. Regular expressions are not turing complete in any sense. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

You're saying that programming is no more or less than writing text intended to be interpreted as a program in a Turing complete language. Where is Inform 7? Where is XSLT? Where is Latex? Python is Turing complete; does this mean if I type 2+2 into the REPL and hit enter that I'm programming?
Or does "programming" refer to a more diffuse activity recognizable by logical rigor and mental modeling of a system's behavior in the future? |

Yes, that is exactly what programming is, Peter. And yes, 2+2 is programming. It's not complicated or intellectually demanding programming, but it is programming nonetheless.
There's obviously a distinction between serious programming and what I mentioned above, just as there is a distinction between writing words and writing literature. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |
