Post     Things I Don't Get

As a political science major, and someone who's followed the last the last three elections, I can't really understand where all the Democrats in the United States have gone. Gore basically won the presidency at a time when self-identified democrats were basically at par with self-identified Republicans, and "independent voters" and "spics" were endogenous groups within those categories.

Now post-Obama, independents and mexicans are these huge new sub-groups which have been carved out of existing voter bases in order to market their narratives as the new demographics Obama must capture. Except, there still remains little evidence that they had anything to do with Obama getting elected (Significant relationship between those voters). On the other hand, there isn't even any evidence that Republicans stayed home at the polls to keep the nigger out of office. I'm sure there were Republicans who voted for Obama based strictly on the scummyness of both McCain/Palin (This is pretty much settled as statistically relevant, that Republicans crossed party lines). But the questions is, Obama won the popular votes by enough to suggest that there weren't a significant amount of Republicans crossing party lines (See: President, nigger) which leads me to conclude that more black people being enfranchised in the 2004 elections have been the major addition to the Democratic party.

But what don't I get? That the Democrats are in incredible trouble for the next two years of politicking. I understand that the media's conservative bias is really harping on every attack against the Democratic congress and the fact that Obama is a black man. Except, the Democrats seem to have a new contingent of black voters who were inspired by 2004-2008, and the fact that for the first time in over 70 years, Congress and the Executive Branch passed legislation which has been completely middle of the road, and yes, border-line socialist (Which isn't actually a bad thing). In fact, most of the legislation passed has been with the help of the commercial sector of society, but done little (Except the insurance bill) to entrench corporate interests in America anymore than they already are.

So I guess the thing I don't get, or my question or whatever, is how is it that the country is so insanely turned against the Democrats/Obama? I don't even think this is an image issue anymore, it just seems absurd. It's as if for every legislative victory and hard-work that the Democrats have worked for, despite being total pussies, only pushes them farther and farther into the mainstream as being unfit to govern? This is contrasted by the fact that the United States Republican party are complete do-nothings, who have actually shown up to work for the last two years and basically attempted to have purposefully done nothing so that they could try to clear a blank slate in order to destroy Obama in 2012 (End of the world).

I tried not to answer my own questions, but I was just wondering if where you guys live in the UNITED STATES, are people just inherently awful and racist with no concept of any factual going ons in politics? I mean, I usually am pessimistic and I generally pass over optimism on principle, but I cannot help but notice that contrary to what the federal government is actually doing, MOST people seem to think that the federal government has spent the passed two years raping the children of its constituents.

Also, I don't understand when girls say that they really want to sleep with me but I have to sabotage those events by turning into a caricature of myself.

Just about every white person I've met here is a republican that talks about how at least Bush was in the army and that Greece is proof that socialism will kill us all.

From everything that I can gather, all of this is the result of a Republican narrative from before we were politically aware. From 1980(maybe earlier, but at least since here) to 2000, the Republicans managed to convince something like 60% of the electorate that Democrats are soft on crime and military matters, and that they tax everyone to give money to lazy people. These ideas are already utterly entrenched in the minds of the majority of people over 30, and there's just no way to show them otherwise.

Although the nigger problem exists, I've never thought it that it was significant. A lot people hate Democrats because they see them as the caricatures that Republicans painted them. A significant amount of self-identified Democrats probably feel this way as well. This is especially apparent whenever anyone at all justified Bush's response to 9/11 with "Well, just imagine if AL GORE had been president on that day." These people don't ever go on to describe this scenario, they just shudder in horror as they picture Al Gore calling up the Taliban to surrender America to the Muslims, or whatever. They don't have any particular reason to think Al Gore would have handled it differently or worse than Bush. It's just that he's a Democrat, and therefore is incapable of responding correctly to terrorism. You could ask these people if there's any Democrat who would have done the right thing after 9/11, or whether there's any Republican who would have done the wrong thing, and they won't have an answer because they're too stupid to process detail.

Also, people are just as insane about Pelosi and Reid. They literally don't make a distinction between different Democrats. Their only problem is that they don't know the names of all of them.

The whole thing about Sherod might have been a democrat charade to actually rile up the black voters again.

http://www.becker-posner-blog.com/2010/07/against-extending-unemployment-benefitsposner.html

I understand all the basic economics of this article, but I disagree with the statistic offered that:

1) People who are unemployment wait for unemployment to run out before finding a job

And also the logical leap that the guy makes saying that the unemployment benefits being extended will actually reduce employment. I don't get that leap of logic at all.

It's very hard to remain on unemployment, I doubt the people who are on it want to be on it as long as possible. Since it's almost more work than having an actual job.

That's the thing I get when I read it. Here is a guy who is more brilliant than me at a lot of things, more eloquent than me, and he is a subscribed Economist. Yet, his adherence to pure economic theory blinds him to the reality of what actually being on unemployment is like, or he refuses to look at aggregated data that shows that unemployement is a lot of work, and that people on unemployment do tend to look for jobs as a result.

America is a sort of dictator democracy. The difference between the two parties is cosmetic to give the people the illusion of choice and control.

In the primary, Obama, McCain, and Clinton went to AIPAC, giving a huge pro-Israel speech to convince them that they are on Israel's side, with little distinction between each other.

Many people wait until their unemployment runs out to go apply for new jobs in normal economic times. However, right now there ARE NO JOBS in places like Michigan and Nevada, so taking away unemployment is really just going to hurt people for no benefit.

The reason people are against the Democrats now is that the economy is crap, and they are the incumbents. That has pretty much always happened with midterm elections. See the graph on the attached for details.

And all the Iranian candidates gave their support to the fundamentalist ideal. Sometimes there are issues that everyone supports (though Ron Paul, who I would never support, probably wouldn't go to AIPAC).

Is there a candidate in Iran who would cut off funding to Hezbollah?

Oh, I forgot, ha ha ha, silly me. Like the president in Iran is anything more than a figure head!

Yogurtman is pretty right. No matter who is at fault for the economy, whoever is currently in power at the time of the election will lose the most. I still don't see the Democrats losing the control of either House or Senate, but will just have small majorities (which are useless in the Senate these days).

It would be a funny prank if the ayatollah told Ahmadinejad he was no longer allowed to go to the bathroom.
